Diabetic Foot Facts and Figures:
- 60 – 70% of people with Diabetes will lose feeling in their feet (Peripheral Neuropathy)
- Around 25% of people will develop a foot ulcer
- More than half of those ulcers will become infected and require hospitalization
- 1 in 5 infected ulcers will require an amputation
- Every 20 seconds, somewhere in the world, someone loses a limb as a consequence of Diabetes
- After an amputation, 50% of those people will have their other limb amputated within 2 years
- After an amputation, 50% of those people will die. Worse death rate than most cancers: (Prostate cancer 8%, Breast cancer 23%, Colon cancer 39%)
- Having a wound immediately doubles ones chances of dying at 10 years compared to those without Diabetes
- Approximately 80% of diabetic related amputations are preventable
- Every person with Diabetes should see a diabetic foot specialist at least 1 time per year
